This will be the last MAP update of 2017 and we want to thank you for your contribution to the work of MAP this year. MAP has been working hard to develop plans to address key issues faced by schools working closely with a wide range of partners. We will share more information with you in the New Year and look forward to working with you all in the new term.

Engaging Able Writers Conference – Thursday 25th January 2018
MSTA & Middlesbrough English Hub are holding an Engaging Able Writers Conference from Alan Peat, which features enrichment and enhancement strategies for able writers. Middlesbrough College Open Event – Saturday 3rd February 2018, 10 am to 12 noon
Middlesbrough College will be holding an Open Event, offering potential students the perfect opportunity to find out more about the college and the courses on offer. During the event students can visit the interactive subject stands, take a tour of the £100m campus, get free impartial careers advice, find out about great student perks, meet current students and apply for courses.

Macmillan Academy are holding a Post-16 open morning on Saturday 10th February 2018 from 10 am to 12 noon. The event will be a great opportunity for students from secondary schools across Middlesbrough to go along and look around the Post-16 facilities and find out about courses, business links and university options available to them.

Unlocking Talent, Fulfilling Potential: A plan for improving social mobility through education
Attached is the paper which was presented to Parliament this week by the Rt Hon Justine Greening MP on the Government’s plans for improving special mobility through education.
Launch of DfE consultation on QTS and teacher career progression
The DfE have launched their consultation on strengthening Qualified Teacher Status and improving career progression for teachers, and thought it may be of interest to you. The consultation will be open for a period of 12 weeks and run until 9 March 2018. You can find the consultation here.
DfE launch a call for evidence as part of its review of changes to teaching of sex and relationship education, and PSHE
The current statutory guidance for teaching Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) that was introduced in 2000 is being updated. The Children and Social Work Act legislation that was passed by Parliament earlier this year, set about preparations to make relationships education compulsory in all primary schools and relationships and sex education compulsory in all secondary schools. As part of the review process the government is asking parents, teachers and young people to help shape the new curriculum, and the call for evidence will extend over an 8 week period until 12th February 2018.

Young Carers Information for Schools
Attached is some information which has been produced by The Junction whose aim is to ‘Make life better for young carers’. A large part of this is to increase their support within school, college and training. There is an award that schools can gain by supporting young carers.
